The final day of the North American Passive House Network’s PH2020: Choose Your Future virtual conference is tomorrow. To date, the conference has featured five days of top-notch presentations and panels from the Passive House community’s brain trust. More than 24 hours of video content has been archived since the conference began June 24, and you can still register to get access to all sessions, as well as participate in tomorrow’s live chat, by clicking here. Some of the standout sessions so far have been: The three Owners Roundtables moderated by Beth Eckenrode, the throwdown between Vancouver and New York (Day 2), “Own Your Passive House Development Process Too” (Day 3), “Why Does COVID-19 Hate Passive House?” (Day 4), “How Smart Is Your Data?” (Day 5), and “Passive Assets” (Day 1).
Tomorrow’s schedule reveals that NAPHN plans to bring their A game to finish out the conference. Sessions will include presentations on how changing regulations will push the building industry to evolve (especially in New York City), New York State’s Buildings of Excellence program, high-performance highrise enclosures, and how warming climate conditions will affect Passive House design. The closing plenary (with the Accelerator’s own Zack Semke) will ask perhaps the biggest question of all: “What next?”

The range of topics highlights one of the key ways that NAPHN is a standard-bearer for the Passive House movement. Each day reminded us that the Passive House community cannot operate in a vacuum, nor can building emissions be reduced by either policy changes or advancements in building science alone. It requires a concerted effort from policymakers, designers, engineers, contractors, tradespeople, and even owners and developers to learn about the merits of Passive House design and to spread the news.
When one does nothing, to paraphrase Jean-Paul Sartre, one has made the choice to endorse the present and the status quo. Choosing your future is about taking action and supplanting the status quo with a preferable (in this case more equitable) model. Tomorrow’s sessions will cement that point.
If you’re still hungry for more Passive House content, the chair of NAPHN, Bronwyn Barry, will be our featured guest at tomorrow night’s Global Passive House Happy Hour, which will serve as the unofficial NAPHN afterparty. To register, click here.
