Twenty-nine projects have been shortlisted in the 2020 Waikato / Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards. Of the 29 projects in total, 19 are vying for the one award that will go to a new single-family home in the Waikato / Bay of Plenty region. This include the Thornton Road Passive House in Cambridge, which was designed by the New Zealand-based firm Architype. Their first Passive House project on the North Island, the home was relatively easy to bring to the standard due to the mildness of the climate. Thanks to “simple structural insulated wall panels, good quality timber framed windows with double glazing, and a simple albeit carefully modeled insulated slab,” the home hit Passive House metrics and was certified by PHI.
Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has put site visits on hold, so the juries will have to wait until the figurative storm has passed until they have the opportunity to tour the projects and decide on a winner for the award. Until then, we wish all those nominated good luck.
