For this week’s Passive House Happy Hour, we will welcome Ya’el Santopinto and Graeme Stewart from ERA Architecture. They will be discussing the rehabilitation of the Ken Soble Tower in Hamilton, Ontario.
The project, which is scheduled to be completed later this year, has attracted a lot of attention because of its size. At 18 stories and 80,000 ft, the retrofit is one of the largest EnerPHit-certified projects in the world. Once completed, the building will provide 146 units of affordable housing to seniors, reinvigorate surrounding community greenspaces, and slash greenhouse gas emissions by up to 94%. Additionally, up to 20% of the units will be barrier free and the common areas—both indoor and outdoor—will be accessible and are designed for aging in place.
More than just being an important project in its own right, it is expected to be an integral component in the revitalization of Hamilton’s West Harbour. The retrofit may also inform broader trends in Canadian housing policy as the nation works to rehabilitate its social housing stock to make it more efficient and accessible while cutting emissions and improving indoor air quality.
Don’t miss out on a chance to delve into the details of this enormous retrofit.
