Event Description

The façade system is one of the most important components in the construction of a high-performance building, especially in Passive House construction which looks to achieve very low air leaks, and durability of the building. The façade is constructed with 3 of the 5 key components of a Passive House - an air-tight layer, continuous insulation, and windows & doors. These three items alone have a major impact on the real-life performance of the building, and more importantly, on the health of the building materials and indoor-air quality for its occupants.
The correct detailing of the building envelope and the appropriate thermal specification for the window and door system is critical to ensure the airtightness of the assembly.

Through built case studies, this presentation aims to show the advantages, challenges, and construction details involved in successfully designing a façade system that can outperform Code, and achieve passive house level of thermal insulation, airtightness, and indoor comfort for Retrofit projects in urban areas throughout the Northeast. Additionally, we will discuss how these case studies can be applied to other common construction methods and new construction projects by implementing the core principles of the Passive House Standard.
