Tucked into a 30-acre site along North Carolina’s Pamlico River, the Nevils Creek Net Zero Passive House is a 2,027-square-foot off-grid residence that combines regional heritage with cutting-edge sustainability. Designed for renowned yacht builder Peter Johnstone, the project draws on yacht electrification to integrate advanced DC systems, achieving net-zero performance while reflecting the traditional form of the North Carolina tobacco barn. This home proves that energy efficiency and architectural elegance can thrive together—even in the challenging Southeastern climate. Through the lens of this unique project, Kristina Held explores key design strategies tailored to the Southeastern U.S., including passive solar optimization, leveraging Passive House for easier net-zero outcomes, and the role of direct current (DC) systems in residential design. Attendees will gain insight into how DC can enhance efficiency without getting lost in translation, and how climate-responsive design can meet both energy goals and aesthetic aspirations. About the Presenter: Kristina Held is the founder of Held Architecture, a Charlotte-based firm known for regenerative, sustainable design.
