Case Study: Hawthorne Youth and Community Center
Placetailor was engaged by the Hawthorne Youth and Community Center (HYCC) for a deep energy retrofit to both reduce energy bills and optimize operating funds. The fiercely independent neighborhood of Fort Hill served as both client and construction partner, with engagement in the process of evaluation, concept development, and energy modelling. Placetailor’s design kept the existing Butler Building structure and added two single-story wings comprising classroom space, activity areas, and accessible bathrooms. A PHPP model was used to educate board and staff members on the potential for wall assemblies to reduce energy loads, with variations for window size and placement and roof design. A number of strategies were used to achieve the required insulation levels and thermal control, all while still delivering a building with a reasonable construction cost overall.
