Ice Air Joins Passive House Accelerator as a Champion Sponsor

Passive House Accelerator is pleased to announce that Ice Air has joined the Accelerator community as a Champion Sponsor. Based in Mount Vernon, New York, Ice Air is a leading provider of all-in-one heat pumps for multifamily, commercial, hospitality, institutional, and mixed-use buildings, with equipment built for new construction and retrofit work alike. Ice Air has representatives in most major metropolitan markets, and they recognize that project needs are not just building-specific, but also climate-specific.

Ice Air’s product lineup includes a range of air-source, water-source, and hybrid heat pumps for centralized and decentralized systems. Ice Air PTHP Pro units fit standard 42”x 16” wall sleeves, making them an easy replacement for multifamily and hotel retrofits. Ice Air’s cold climate technology even allows for efficient heating performance on their PTHP units down to –5°F.

For projects needing a slimmer, more sleek profile, the iCool XC wall-mounted heat pump packs the same all-in-one logic into a cabinet less than eight inches deep. Ideal for multifamily buildings in colder climates, the iCool XC can offer efficient heating below 0°F.

Ice Air’s Vertical Stack Pro provides all-electric heating, cooling, and ventilation in one compact module. The concealed in-wall design, small footprint, and integrated ERV make the Vertical Stack Pro the best choice for high-rise multifamily buildings. Like the PTHP Pro, the system provides heating performance down to –5°F. The Vertical Closet Pro, is a floor-mounted system that provides more heating and cooling capacity (up to 2.5 tons), making it a better fit for larger apartments. It also comes with an integrated ERV, and its cold climate performance is certified to –5°F.

For buildings designed around a central plant, Ice Air's HPWH-SC air-source heat pump chiller/heaters draw energy from outdoor air to produce both hot and chilled water, and they're certified to operate down to –13°F. On the distribution side, the company's water-source heat pumps and fan coil units carry that heating and cooling into occupied spaces, and their VSHPGE series brings the same all-electric approach to geothermal systems.

Ice Air is deeply familiar with high-performance building methodologies, including Passive House standards. While passive buildings prioritize a tight, well-insulated, and thermal bridge-free building envelope to dramatically reduce a building’s energy demand, these buildings still need energy-efficient and climate-friendly heating and cooling systems to meet the load that’s left. Heat pumps provide that solution, and they are critical components in the effort to electrify and decarbonize our building stock.

Ice Air will bring that expertise to the Accelerator community in the coming months. In the meantime, join them on October 21 from 1–2 p.m. ET for a continuing education session led by Ice Air’s Louis Pfundstein, titled “All-in-One Heat Pumps: Decentralized Electrification for Multifamily Buildings.” Attendees will learn:

  • the primary configurations of all-in-one heat pumps and the building types each suits best;

  • how variable-speed compressors deliver heating and cooling without a central plant;

  • how to evaluate cold-climate performance through COP, heating capacity, and the behavior of supplemental electric heat; and

  • how to apply capacity, footprint, ventilation, and acoustic criteria to real multifamily projects.

The session offers continuing education credits through AIA and ASPE.

Ice Air Founder and CEO Ric Nadel said, “We’re proud to join the Passive House Accelerator community and share our expertise in high-performance, cold-climate heat pump solutions that support a more energy-efficient, all-electric future."

“Decarbonizing multifamily housing means electrifying an enormous number of apartments, and centralized systems aren't feasible for many of them,” said Zack Semke, Director of the Passive House Accelerator. “Ice Air builds equipment for exactly that situation. Their heat pumps give designers a way to deliver efficient heating and cooling unit by unit, and I’m glad our community will have the opportunity to get into the weeds with them on details.”

“Every Passive House project I’ve worked on in New York eventually arrives at the same questions: where does the equipment go, how loud is it, and will it keep people warm in January?” said Michael Ingui, Founder of the Passive House Accelerator. “Ice Air has been answering those questions right here in our backyard for years. I’m thrilled to welcome them to the Accelerator.”
