Walsh Construction Becomes Accelerator Partner

Walsh Construction (Walsh) is one of our longest-running Accelerator Partners and one of the stalwarts of the Passive House community in the Pacific Northwest. Walsh is best known for working on some of the most large-scale and ambitious high-performance projects on the West Coast, including Orchards at Orenco, a two-phase project in Hillsboro, Oregon that helped set the stage for multi-family Passive House construction in the Pacific Northwest. DESC’s Hobson Place in Seattle was the largest affordable multifamily Passive House (Phius CORE 2021) project in region when it opened in 2022. Walsh also completed two projects in 2024 that are pending Phius-certification: Parkview at Terwilliger Plaza, a 127-unit senior living community in downtown Portland; and Mercy Greenbrae in Lake Oswego, an affordable housing complex on the former site of Marylhurst University.

Twenty-five years ago, Walsh established a Quality program focused on improving the quality and performance of our projects, with special attention to building enclosure. Today Walsh’s Quality Department is a team of professionals trained in building science who provide feedback throughout the pre-construction and construction phases on constructability, durability, energy efficiency, and cost. This process is all with the goal of meeting and exceeding not only code required and/or enhanced performance standards, but also improving long-term building durability, energy efficiency, and indoor health for occupants of their mostly nonprofit affordable housing buildings.

While Walsh is highly respected for their craftsmanship and expertise, they have also garnered a reputation for leadership and the unique ability to shepherd project teams through the challenges associated with building to Passive House standards for the first time. They are committed to engaging with owners, designers and subcontractors in collaborative, integrated design and construction process to ensure project goals are achieved. Through diligent coordination and execution, Walsh has established itself as trusted partner to clients and an industry leader in delivering high-performance projects.

Mercy Greenbrae at a Glance

Of the many large-scale projects that Walsh has been a part of in recent years, Mercy Greenbrae stands out as one of the most exciting. Construction was completed in spring 2024 on the 100-unit, 100% affordable residence. Working with Portland-based Carleton Hart Architects, Walsh helped the firm better apply passive methodologies to the building, especially with respect to air sealing.

You can read about this project in the upcoming issue of Passive House Accelerator magazine, which is due to be published on October 16.
