Designing for Fire Resilience

Are you ready to build fire-resilient, climate-positive buildings?

Join us for Designing for Fire Resilience, a Reimagine Buildings Conference

Online, March 14, 2025, 11:30am – 4:00pm (Eastern)

We know that climate change threatens us with frequent and devastating fires, so how do we create fire-resilient buildings that don't make the climate problem worse? How do we build safer buildings that are also part of the climate solution? To find out, join us online for Designing for Fire Resilience.

Half of ticket proceeds will be donated to the California Community Foundation Wildfire Relief and Recovery Fund.

Noon – 1:00pm (Eastern) | Session 1: Introduction to Fire Resilience in Buildings

Session 1 will explore the critical importance of building homes and structures that can withstand disasters, particularly wildfires, while also considering the broader impacts of climate change. Key takeaways will include practical strategies for homeowners to protect their property from fire, including lessons from those who have rebuilt after wildfires, and insights from experts on hardening homes against extreme conditions. Additionally, attendees will learn how to integrate fire-resilient principles into high-performance building practices, taking the next steps toward minimizing damage and enhancing resilience in the face of future disasters.

1:00pm – 2:00pm (Eastern) | Session 2: Designing for Fire Resilience

Session 2 will focus on designing homes and buildings that prioritize fire resilience, featuring case studies and practical solutions for safeguarding against wildfire risks. Key highlights include lessons learned from the Santa Cruz Fires and insights into smoke-tight homes to protect indoor air quality, drawing from examples like NYC’s recent smoke event. The session will also cover fire-safe landscaping and hardscaping, along with the critical role of airtightness and mechanical ventilation in ensuring resilience against both fire and smoke infiltration.

2:00pm – 3:00pm (Eastern) | Session 3: Panel, Systematic Approaches to Fire Resistant Assemblies

Session 3 will feature a panel discussion on fire-resistant building assemblies, focusing on the essential components of roofs, walls, and windows, including rainscreens and ventilation. Moderated by Andrew Michler, panelists will address the practicalities of assembly and systems integration, offering strategies for creating efficient, cost-effective fire-resistant buildings without reinventing the wheel. The discussion will also challenge the notion that Passive House is too expensive or time-consuming, providing insights on how to make these resilient building techniques more accessible and how builders can effectively implement them.
