Phius Windows: Enabling Flexibility in High-Performance Buildings

cascadia cs

As building energy codes and performance standards continue to advance across the United States, Phius (Passive House Institute US) has emerged as a leading, climate-specific framework for delivering predictable, low-energy buildings. While Phius is often perceived as restrictive, its performance-based approach actually creates opportunities for design flexibility—particularly when the building enclosure is optimized early.

This session explores the Phius approach to windows and their outsized impact on whole-building energy performance. Attendees will gain a working understanding of how Phius evaluates fenestration using climate-specific targets, energy modeling, and verified performance data, and how high-performance windows can offset other enclosure and system constraints.

Through real-world examples, the presentation demonstrates how thoughtful window selection—across materials, glazing configurations, and installation strategies—can help project teams meet Phius energy targets while supporting architectural intent, constructibility, occupant comfort, and cost optimization.
