Built Environment Lags Behind All Other Sectors in Modernizing, According to IPCC Report Coauthor

Dezeen’s Jennifer Hahn spoke with Yamina Saheb, co-author of the latest report from the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). No surprise, the panel found that we need to make dramatic changes to myriad industries and practices to avert climate catastrophe, and Saheb told Dezeen that the built environment sector’s resistance to change is particularly egregious.

"The sector hasn't modernized at all since the second world war," she told Dezeen. "And now, the data shows it's lagging behind all other sectors."

"Each gram of greenhouse gas emissions from buildings means a mistake in their design," she added. "Architects and urban planners should really look at this report carefully and rethink the way they work."
