Climate Week Kicks Off in New York City

New York City Climate Week has long been a way to learn and connect with others who are working to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and create a more sustainable economy. Unlike many other conferences or events that are primarily based on ways to reduce operational or embodied carbon within the built environment, NYC Climate Week is not an industry-specific event, so it allows for more cross-pollination across disciplines, especially those that may not otherwise interact.

Like previous years, there are several opportunities to take part whether you are in the city or not, as many of these events are either virtual or hybrid. This year’s events are grouped into one of ten categories, including:

  • Energy

  • Environmental justice

  • Finance

  • Food

  • Health

  • Heavy industry

  • Nature

  • Policy

  • Sustainable living

  • Transport

There is also a main program track that features events from the aforementioned categories. The full calendar of events can be found here.

There may not be a lot of events that are explicitly about Passive House or high-performance building, but this gives you the opportunity to get creative with your choices and expand your horizons! Some highlights from tomorrow include:

Climate Resilient Infrastructure: Building a More Sustainable Future

FEMA is now responding to more frequent and intense disasters than any time in history. The time is now to act as a united voice to address the impacts of climate change and prepare for a more resilient future. This one-day summit is an opportunity to examine resilient infrastructure challenges and innovative solutions. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is partnering with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to host Climate Resilient Infrastructure: Building a More Sustainable Future. Attendees will get to hear from FEMA and our public, private, and academic partners on a number of topics including nature-based solutions, net-zero energy projects, energy efficiency efforts, the use of salvaged materials and how each of these fit into nationwide resilience strategy.

Timber Matters: Regional Approaches to Sustainable Mass Timber Ecosystems

As society seeks climate solutions that decarbonize cities and leverage the carbon benefits of forests and trees, mass timber – a family of massive engineered wood building construction materials used in primarily in large buildings – is frequently cited as a powerful tool to achieve multiple benefits. Nationwide, more mass timber apartment buildings, community centers, schools, and offices are opening their doors, and domestic mass timber supply is gradually increasing as well. As mass timber momentum builds, leaders across the U.S. are working to facilitate mass timber ecosystems that maximize mass timber’s forest, carbon, and climate benefits in ways that reflect the specific needs and contexts of the communities and environments in those regions.

Reimagining the Built Environment for a Net Zero Future

The increasing pressure to meet decarbonization deadlines drives a demand for low-carbon spaces. However, energy and demand response is falling short in major global markets. This has prompted utilities, corporations, and policymakers to seek innovative solutions to address growing energy and low-carbon building needs. Novel approaches to the built environment and energy consumption offer significant opportunities.

While AI has the ability to hasten the drive toward net zero through innovative climate and energy solutions, its very use is placing additional demand on the grid. This Financial Times briefing, held during Climate Week NYC and in partnership with Carrier and JLL, will explore the opportunities and challenges presented by AI. It will also cover the solutions and approaches that building owners, occupiers, solution providers, and policymakers need to adopt to build a more resilient and sustainable infrastructure in the face of rising demand and climate change.

Sustainability: A Pathway to Luxury and Serenity

Michael Ingui has recently released a short post on the Ingui Architecture website. It's a great reminder that sustainability is not necessarily about virtuous sacrifice, as it is far too often marketed; it can also be about building something that is well-crafted, more resilient, and more durable.
