Path Toward Zero: Material Choice in Low-Carbon Design is a PHA LIVE session focused on the critical role that material selection plays in achieving sustainable, low-carbon architecture. Participants will gain insight into the various methodologies used to assess the carbon impact of building materials, including Whole Life Carbon Assessment (WLCA), Upfront Carbon, and traditional Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Through a deeper understanding of these frameworks, attendees will learn how consistent application of a chosen methodology is essential for realizing repeatable and positive outcomes in low-carbon design. Led by Timothy Lock, management partner at OPAL, this session explores how material choices drive ecological and societal transformation in architecture. With extensive experience managing large-scale institutional projects and leading OPAL’s climate action approach, Timothy is committed to high-integrity, sustainable design. He serves on the Maine AIA Board of Directors, the AIA National Strategic Council, and is Co-Chair of the Maine AIA Committee on the Environment.
