WED: PASSIVE HOUSE LIVE, FIELD ADVENTURES WITH HEAT PUMPS AND ERVS

Photo

Learn from the field adventures of two seasoned pros from Steven Winter Associates! Karla Butterfield, Sustainable Director at SWA, will share guidance about ducted returns on heat pumps. Ducted returns are seldom designed and installed correctly, if at all. Whether located in a ceiling cavity or a mechanical closet, access, equipment orientation and return air considerations are critical for operation and maintenance. Scott Pusey, Principal Sustainability Consultant at SWA, will share his pointers about ERV testing & balancing, both for smaller single-family systems and larger rooftop units. Get the Zoom Link.

THU: BPI EPISODE 6, ACHIEVING THERMAL PERFORMANCE IN MODULAR CLT DEVELOPMENTS

A DELICATE BALANCE: WEIGHING EMBODIED VS. OPERATIONAL CARBON, PART TWO

In this all-hands-on-deck moment for the climate, construction industry professionals have an incredible opportunity to significantly reduce their work’s immediate carbon impact at little to no cost, with tools and strategies available to them today, and without disrupting much of their process. What achieving these levels of reduction does require is critically assessing both the embodied carbon (EC) and operational carbon (OC) of a project. An optimized minimum of a project’s total carbon emissions can only be met by evaluating concurrently EC’s and OC’s relative contributions and the strategies to reduce them, rather than solving for one at the expense of the other. Read article.

March 29: "Living the 1.5 Degree Lifestyle"

Photo

Living the 1.5 Degree Lifestyle, the new book written by Lloyd Alter, reveals the carbon cost of everything we do, identifying where we can make big reductions, while not sweating the small stuff. The international scientific consensus is that we have less than a decade to drastically slash our collective carbon emissions to keep global heating to 1.5 degrees and avert catastrophe. This means that many of us have to cut our individual carbon footprints by over 80% to 2.5 tonnes per person per year by 2030. But where to start?
